Chartered August 1, 1933, Plumbers & Pipefitters Local 553 is located in East Alton, Illinois, and has jurisdiction of a seven county area in southern Illinois.
Local 553’s membership consists of plumbers and pipefitters who are proud to provide area contractors with the highest skill levels and history of quality workmanship. Our journeymen and apprentices are trained in plumbing, pipefitting, welding, and HVAC, consisting of in-classroom, as well as, on jobsite training. We provide our members with the education needed to provide to be successful and provide a job well done, with integrity.
We are community involved union who participates in area events such as fundraisers and scholarship programs, food and pantry drives just to name a few.
We remember and appreciate all the past members who, through their hard work and dedication, have made Local 553 what it is today. And, we are thankful for our current and future members whose hard work and dedication will help our local continue to be strong and grow into the future.
The Plumbers and Pipefitters Local 553 Training Program prides itself on training members to be the most efficient in the plumbing, pipefitting and HVAC industries. Since the first apprentice class graduated April 24, 1949, the program has built a tradition to provide contractors with the best workers possible. Local 553 has over 10,000 square foot of training facilities, which includes 18 welding booths, a rigging structure, classrooms and various modules for training to accomplish this. Apprentices are trained in welding, plumbing, blueprint reading, and general aspects of the pipe fitting industries prior to becoming Journeyworkers. Training does not end in Local 553 until members retire. Foreman, medical gas, rigging, plumbing continuing education, instrumentation, welding certification, and crane signaling are just a few of the many areas of training offered to members in addition to Apprentice training.
